Installation Problems

Like many of the later Sierra games, Leisure Suit Larry 6 has installation problems with the installer not fuctioning with faster PCs or under Windows XP. The game will install in Windows XP without trouble if you just avoid a couple of things.

Problem - System Test Crash:
The installer crashes when running the system test with this error:

SETUP caused a General Protection Fault in
module _SETUP.EXE at 0004:6357.

Choose close. SETUP will close.

You can't rerun the setup without ending the process (Ctl+Alt+Delete) or rebooting.

Solution:
Skip the system test. You will still be able to install the game.

Audio Problems

Audio problems are common in the later Sierra DOS SCI games. There's no single fix for all these games. You can try the Windows version, if running on 32-bit Windows.

Problem - Poor Quality / No Sound (Win9x and XP):
The game has no sound or the music is of poor quality.

Solution 1 (preferred):
Play the game in DOSBox. It also will work with the MT-32 sound module, if you are fortunate to have one.

Solution 2:
Use VDMSound. The game work well with VDMSound. The sound will be as good as your audio hardware, and as with DOSBox, it works with the MT-32 sound module.

Solution 3:
Play the game with FreeSCI, a third party Interpreter for Sierra's early SCI games.

Solution 4 (DOS/Win9x):
Install DOS drivers for your soundcard. Without DOS drivers installed you won't have sound in a DOS window in Windows 9x. If you can't find DOS drivers for your soundcard, there is an alpha (developmental) version of VDMS that you can try.

Game Specific Bugs

Problem - Mouse Doesn't Work:
After installing the game from Leisure Suit Larry's Greatest Hits and Misses, the mouse does not work.

Solution:
Open the "RESOURCE.CFG" file in your Larry 6 folder with Notepad. Look for the line

mouseDrv = none

and change it to:

mouseDrv = STDMOUSE.DRV

The install should have had it in the config file, but it does not.

Problem - "Lamp of Wisdom" "Oops" Error:
An "Oops" error occurs on the beach after lighting the "Lamp of Wisdom".

Solution:
Apply this patch.

Problem - Lighting Match "Oops" Error:
An "Oops" error occurs on the beach when trying to light the match.

Solution:
Apply this patch.

Problem - Stopping the Tram Again:
You can't stop the tram again to get the batteries, after the first time.

Solution:
Apply this patch.

Problem - Rosé Eleeta Crash:
The game crashes moments after giving a gift to Rosé Eleeta when playing the Windows CD version of the game. Also, the game locks up when filling the whale oil lamp.

Solution:
Open RESOURCE.WIN file in Notepad and change the last line to:

patchDir=C:\SIERRA\LL6CD;D:\HIRES\PATCHES

There might be an error with a colon missing in the D:\ directory path.

Note:Saved games that you made before altering the RESOURCE.WIN file will not work once you make the correction. It is best to take care of this before starting the game from the beginning.

Problem - High Colonic Crash:
The game crashes when Larry is about to receive a high colonic with this error:

Error 99: Error loading resource 3250.snd
i:\interp\sci\ibm\sci32\restype.cpp(54)
Script 64989/$b3

Solution:
Notes: This is only for the Windows version! Also, after making these changes your saved games will no longer work. You'll have to start all over again from the beginning. (This assumes you installed the game into the default directory on your drive C: and your CD-ROM drive is drive D:. Change the lines below to match your computer.)

  1. Open "RESOURCE.WIN" in Notepad and find the line that says:

    patchDir=c:\sierra\ll6cd;d\patches

  2. Insert a colon, backslash, and the word "hires" so it reads:

    patchDir=c:\sierra\ll6cd;d:\hires\patches

Problem - Tram Won't Stop:
You can't stop the tram with the match.

Solution:
There may be a problem with your saved game. To get past this error, you will need to restore to a previous saved game at a point BEFORE you talked to the girl in the mud bath who wants the batteries. Before you talk to her, get the match from the bar. Then talk to the girl. Then go to the tram as quickly as possible. The faster you go from talking to the girl to getting the tram to stop, the less chance there is of this problem occurring.

Problem - Cellulite Lamp Hang:
Cellulite lamp hangs game

Solution #1:
To fix this Lockup, you will need to edit the RESOURCE.WIN file in the game directory:

Open RESOURCE.WIN in Notepad. Find the line that says:

patchDir=c:\sierra\ll6cd;d\patches

(This assumes D: is your CD-ROM drive. If this is not the case, substitute the correct letter for your CD-ROM drive.) Change the line by adding a colon ":" and "\hires" to the path of the CD-ROM drive so it reads:

patchDir=c:\sierra\ll6cd;d:\hires\patches

Note the colon ":" between the name of your CD drive ("d") and the first backslash and you have added "\hires" to the end of that line.

After you make these changes, your saved games will no longer work. You will need to start the game over from the beginning.

Solution #2:
Use this save game.

Problem - "Error 99 loading resource 3250.Snd":
Just as Larry is about to receive his high colonic, sometimes the game crashes and you receive this error message:

Error 99: Error loading resource 3250.snd
i:\interp\sci\ibm\sci32\restype.cpp(54)
Script 64989/$b3

Solution:
To fix this Lockup, you will need to edit the RESOURCE.WIN file in the game directory:

Open RESOURCE.WIN in Notepad. Find the line that says:

patchDir=c:\sierra\ll6cd;d\patches

(This assumes D: is your CD-ROM drive. If this is not the case, substitute the correct letter for your CD-ROM drive.) Change the line by adding a colon ":" and "\hires" to the path of the CD-ROM drive so it reads:

patchDir=c:\sierra\ll6cd;d:\hires\patches

Note the colon ":" between the name of your CD drive ("d") and the first backslash and you have added "\hires" to the end of that line.

After you make these changes, your saved games will no longer work. You will need to start the game over from the beginning.

Problem - "1.snd not found" Error:
You manually installed the program and didn't copy the files from the BONUS directory on disk #1. The error occurs about halfway through the program when trying to make Larry get in the limo outside the Hard Disk Cafe.

Solution:
The solution is to copy all the files from the BONUS directory on the Startup disk to the LSL5 directory on the hard drive. Unfortunately, you will then have to start the game over, as the old saved games will end up giving the same error back at the limo. Normally, we do not have subdirectories on our game disks, so if you are used to installing our other programs manually, you will probably encounter this problem.

Problem - No Speech:
The speech is missing on the CD version of the game.

Solution:
There were two CD versions of the game. One with and one without speech. Only the one with speech has a RESOURCE.AUD file that is 484 MB in size. It also has higher rez graphics.

Problem - Sound Effect Noise:
When playing the game in DOSBox, whenever doors open or something requires a sound effect, a buzzing noise keeps sounding.

Solution:
Change sound emulation from "sb16" to "sbpro2" in the dosbox conf file.

Problem - Function Key Sound FXs Not Working:
When "F4", "F6", "F8" & "F10" are pressed, no digital sound effects are heard.

Solution:
The LSL6 sound driver uses some 8bit dma transfers and doesn't work right in sb16 mode, as i recall, can lower the sbtype in config file or use gravis. Change sound emulation from "sb16" to "sbpro2" or use opl2 or GUS in the dosbox conf file.
