RANT

Post by AndreaDraco » Mon Dec 07, 2009 12:39 pm

My new PC arrived today and I eagerly installed Dragon Age on it...

... only to have the game crashing after every five minutes or so. It turned out that this is a common ATI problem and the only fix I found is to downclock my graphic card and boost the fans' setting, otherwise the game will crash continuosly and randomly, prompting me with a black screen and a tiny blue box saying 'Power Saving Mode'. After that, my machine automatically reboots.

Oh, I'm so happy I went with ATI and not nVIDIA. Does anyone know where I can send a bombing letter to them? I feel the urge to destroy one of their building. Oh, and it's not a thing only of my GPU (5870 HD), but of almost every ATI GPU, as testified by the seventeen pages long thread over at Bioware.

If there are that many people that are having issues with the game I would assume that there will be a patch for it before too long.

I hope so, because I'm not particularly happy in having to manually downclock my GPU every time I want to play the game :x

Huh. That's interesting. I have an ATI Radeon 3870 HD and so far Dragon Age runs perfectly.

Is there a way you could create a pre-defined setting that temporarily underclocks the video card every time you load up DA?

You could ask on the ATI/AMD boards.

Andrea, could you attach your dxdiag and write down the system requirements of the game? I would like to check it out.

Sounds like the same problem I had with Mass Effect. Took a whole new G-Force 8800 to get it running.

You can find the system requirements here, under the hidden tab. I've attached the dxdiag.txt.

As a side note, downclocking the GPU to 745 MHz (GPU Clock) and 1080 MHz (Memory Clock) seemed to have solved the problem.

At least I hope :D

Your system is an easy win against the requirements. Overclocking often messes up things though, that happens a lot.
