Unreal Development Kit

Post by DeadPoolX » Thu Nov 05, 2009 12:48 pm

Epic Games has just released the Unreal Development Kit for FREE! This enables the "average" gamer the ability to create and design anything they want using the Unreal 3 Engine. The neat part about this is you DON'T NEED Unreal Tournament 3 to play any game someone makes with this SDK.

Tons of very popular and successful games have been made using this engine, such as: Mass Effect, BioShock, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Mirror's Edge, Gears of War, Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe, America's Army 3.0 and a whole slew of others.

A complete list of games using the UT3 engine can be found on Wikipedia. You'll also see older games made from the UT1 and UT2 engines. For a comparison between the UT1, UT2 and UT3 engines, take a look at this picture.

It'd be nice if someone made an Adventure game using this engine. I don't know how difficult it is to develop a game using the UT3 engine and/or modify it for use with an Adventure game instead a First-Person Shooter. I bet someone will at least TRY. Seeing an Adventure game made with modern graphics would be fantastic. It's about time the Adventure genre step into 2009 and stop pretending it's still 1999 or earlier.

Shadow Complex, which is a 2D playformer in the style of Metroid, also uses Unreal tech. So it wouldn't be hard at all to make an adventure game with it.
