Black Cauldron DOSBox installer

Post by dotkel50 » Wed Oct 28, 2009 2:42 pm

Hello Collector,

I just scored a copy of The Black Cauldron on 5.25 diskettes. I used your DOSBox installer and it seemingly worked ok. But when i started the game i got the following:

Can't find the file 'agi'
Press Enter to try again
Press ESC to quit

Pressing enter doesn't seem to do anything

It looks like some of the files weren't copied over. I have version 2.10, Interpreter 3.002.097, 11/10/88 7:54 pm

The game installed ok using Scummvm but i figured you'd want to know about this.

Let me know if you want the files sent to you.

Thanks,
DK

ScummVM replaces AGI, so it only needs the game data files. It sounds like you weren't able to copy all of the files from the floppies to your temporary folder. Post a list of the files on both disks and let me know what didn't copy over. If you have problems copying anything, you can try using Roadkil's Unstoppable Copier. It is a must have tool for classic game collectors. Data corruption on old floppies is fairly common.

You seem to have a very different version. That is really odd. You are missing some very basic AGI files. There are only 2 5.25" disks in my copy. You are missing AGI, HGC_FONT, LOGDIR, PICDIR, SNDDIR and VIEWDIR. It may be that all of the DIR files are packed into your bcdir file, but the main engine file, AGI is missing. What version is reported in BC.QA?

Update:

I installed the game manually in DOSBox and it's working.

Thanks for reporting it. I posted this elsewhere a few days ago, but in the process of recovering data form a hard drive crash, a number of errors were introduced in some of the installers. They are minor errors, but I have to know of them before I can fix them. Enjoy the games.

Hey Collector, do you want me to host the files somewhere as a back up? On a site and/or on my computer as well? Like as one huge zip file, in the event (Lord forbid) that something like this happens again? I'd be glad to.

It wasn't the compiled installers, but the scripts and resources. I had recompiled the installers to no include the EXEs from the batch compiler I was using since Malware Bytes was giving false positives with them. The recompiled ones used the recovered resources and that is where the errors were introduced.
