Ghostbusters Video Game (Co-Op)

Post by DeadPoolX » Fri Apr 03, 2009 2:05 am

This has been known for a while, but Ghostbusters is coming to all major platforms (PC, PS3, 360, Wii and DS) this summer on its 25th anniversary! The game is written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis (who also voice their own characters) and both have hinted at the game taking place in lieu of a third movie.

All five platforms handle the game differently, but I'm most interested in the Wii version. Unlike the PC, 360 and PS3 versions which allow for Internet-based multiplayer, the Wii is the ONLY version of the game that was designed for side-by-side co-op all through the storyline. You can play it single player if you want, but the entire game can be played co-op, which is a huge selling bonus.

In the Wii version (and presumably other versions too), you play a new recruit and have the option of choosing a male or female character. Most areas in the game can be damaged or destroyed and catching ghosts is heavily dependent on teamwork. The Wii's controls seem very suited to this type of game.

I'm really looking forward to it. Here's the link to the IGN and Co-Optimus articles on the game.

This semi-review is for the Nintendo Wii.

Good News
  • It's really funny
  • Capturing ghosts is a ton of fun
  • Well-paced mix of combat, spirit scanning, and puzzle solving
  • Great sound design.
  • Excellent graphics for the Wii (uses a cartoon-like style instead of photo realism)
  • Local cooperative game play available for the ENTIRE GAME.
  • The highest score was 8.6 from Gamezone while the lowest was 6.5 from Game Informer.
Bad News
  • It's too short
  • A few technical quirks and glitches
  • No online multiplayer option
  • Uses a split-screen format for local cooperative play.
Not much to say here. I was looking forward to this game and I'm pleasantly surprised to see it do so well. Most movie-related games suck and for the Wii version to get rated this highly (when Wii games rarely do) is very encouraging.

I've looked at screen shots and videos from this game and it looks pretty good. As usual, the graphical capability of the Wii copy is less than that of the PS3, Xbox 360 or PC (although it's better than the PS2, PSP and DS). I think the Wii worked around this problem by using a cartoon-like style instead of going for photo realism as in the other versions. I like that style better, since it seems to fit with the franchise.

The best thing about this game is that it has a cooperative mode for the full game. Maia and I love co-op. The three games for the Wii that we've played the most are Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario Kart Wii and Ben 10: Protector of Earth. What do those titles have in common? Co-op game play.

What happens if you cross the streams on co-op mode?

I'm looking forward to this. :D

I have no idea what happens if you cross the streams, but I know I'll have to try it now that you've brought it up. I hope it's horrible and funny.

You're going to be disappointed. :)

You mean the universe doesn't get destroyed every time you cross them? Cheap game designers! We ask for so little!

Okay, so crossing the streams doesn't do a whole lot, but... what about blasting your team mates? :P
