GOG.com games

Post by misslilo » Thu Mar 26, 2009 12:55 pm

Thought we might as well have a thread about games from GOG.com, since I believe they are a player, that has come to stay. :)

And news from today is, that they have just signed up with Ubisoft and thus released:
- Beyond Good & Evil
- Prince of Persia: The Sands of time
- IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946

Other titles to come is:
- Heroes of Might and Magic
- Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon
- Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six
- Far Cry

In case you haven't noticed, I for one love this site

Good idea. The chances of some old titles being re-released by their copyright holders is slim. GOG gives some hope of getting some of the titles that we missed the first time. Also, the fact that they are DRM free is a big selling point. DRM does nothing to stop piracy and only hurts the legitimate customers.

In several interviews today about the Ubisoft deal, they mention, that they hope this deal will tell other companies - like EA and others ;) - that it might be a good idea and not so dangerous afterall.

The GOG Team think, that the reason why Ubisoft signed up, was that they they know a lot of their old classic games resides on torrent sites and thus not giving them any revenue.
At least this way, they'll get something out of it

The GOG Team is also proud of their followers, because so far they haven't seen ANY of their files on any torrent sites. :)

This idea is hardly new.

Seems a lot like Steam to me. That program bypasses DRM as well. I could download Mass Effect off Steam (for a price) and receive it without any DRM. Maia and I didn't do that since she wanted the physical box and DVD.

Another option is Direct2Drive, although I've never used it. It seems promising, but you'll definitely have lengthy downloads considering some games are 8GB or more.

If you're looking for older games (since both Steam and Direct2Drive are more focused on current and new titles), I'd suggest GameTap. They have tons of old games, including those from Sierra and LucasArts. Console games are included too.

I don't think this is anything like that at all.
With GOG you actually own the games, no subscription, no need for being online, no activation.
Free to download as many times you like and to burn on CD/DVD.

Should the company disappear from the face of earth, you can still play the game whenever and whereever you want.... is this something you can find anywhere else?
Sorry, I really don't know this and would like to know, so I ask.. :)

Edit:
Actually what I also like, is the fact, that they try to get as much extras as possible - like soundtracks etc. :)

Direct2Drive allows all of that. However, the games they offer are much newer (although I assume you can purchase and download older titles too) and therefore more expensive and take longer to download. I remember seeing the non-censored version of Indigo Prophecy on there, but I didn't feel like downloading it.

I should add that some of the games GOG has certainly interest me and I might purchase something from them. I've already found some games that I wouldn't mind buying.

I'd like to point out that GOG.com recently released my FAVORITE RPG game ever - Realms of Arkania 1 and 2 (mainly the 2nd - STAR TRAIL)...

http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/realms_of_arkania_1_2

And the third is on its way: http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/realms_of_arkania_3

The reason I mention this is the eGroup I run for Realms of Arkania (Founded: Jul 22, 1999!! Over 10 years ago!) - that I still talk on (Drakensang, which is based on the same game as Realms of Arkania - "The Dark Eye"/"Das Schwarze Auge" - has had a influx of new users, and when I asked where the heck they all came from they were the ones that told me it was released on GOG.com...

Anyway, if you pick it up and need some support, my list can be found at:
