So... Skyrim question

Post by Rath Darkblade » Wed May 01, 2013 5:31 am

Hmm. It looks like on June 7, the official (and inevitable) Skyrim-with-all-the-trimmings will finally be released to the game stores.

I already have the vanilla game, so my question is... if I buy this Skyrim-with-the-lot, will it invalidate the game I've already got on Steam (i.e. will I have a Skyrim listing and a Skyrim-with-fries-with-that listing)? :P Any ideas?

Thanks in advance for the help! :)

Not that I can help, but man, I feel like the only soul who has not played this.

Rath, do yourself a favor and wait for the Steam summer and/or winter sale and buy all the DLC on Steam. Usually you'll get anywhere from 50% to 75% off game and DLC prices during those huge multi-week long sales.

No point in repurchasing the original game (even if it is a GOTY edition or whatever) and if you get the DLC on Steam, you won't have to worry about conflicts.

I don't own Skyrim either. The only Bethesda game I really liked was Fallout 3 and even then I lost interest after a while. I have a short attention span, so Bethesda games -- with their open-world environments and "do-whatever-you-want" gameplay -- aren't the best for me.

That was my problem with Oblivion. I do like the open-world'ness - but man, the questing system was so horrible that I'd forget where I picked up all these freaking quests from. "I remember this lady needed this necklace I got off this ogre... Now... where the frick was she?"

Well, to be fair both Oblivion and Skyrim point you to the city where you have to go to complete a quest, once you select it and make it your active quest.

Really? Because, either I couldn't figure that out or something. I literally had like 10 or 12 quests that needed to be completed, but I didn't see anything on the map indicator or anything, telling me where I should go? (This whole point you in the right direction wasn't a patch or anything, was it?)

No, no. You just have to click on the quest and then click on "Follow on the map" or something to that effect. After that, on the map, you'll see a green arrow (or a red one, depending on wheter the character/locale you have to get to is inside your current location or outside) pointing to where you need to go.

To answer the question: the way most games on Steam work is that there's only one entry in the library for the game, and any DLCs would just modify that entry (you'd be able to see which DLCs you have via the DLC tab in the game properties). So if you already own the base game and then buy the complete version, all that means is that the DLCs will be added to your existing game. So buying the base game and some DLCs and then buying the complete version will have the same end result as just buying the complete version.
