King's Quest II SCI in your browser

Post by MusicallyInspired » Tue May 24, 2011 8:02 pm

The SCI Programming Community website has added a new feature: the ability to play in-progress SCI games right in your browser using jDOSBox. I've added the current build of King's Quest II SCI for all to play. Try it out! It's completable up until the top of the quartz tower where the lion resides. Many things are still missing or buggy but you can get an idea for how it's coming along.

Play King's Quest II SCI in your browser!

Awesome.

Except a lot of the screens I can walk over the trees - like there's not there to "block" my path - I walk right through them - same with the rocks on the beach. And it has no idea what a trident is - since it won't let me pick it up!

Absolutely, it's a work in progress. That's the whole idea, a way for us to see how far the project is along; a great way for the creator to share without actually calling it 'complete'.

The screens where you walk through stuff are the old AGI backgrounds which are placeholder and need to be replaced. It wouldn't make sense to draw in the priority and control lines for those since it'd be different once the new backgrounds are in.

You can't pick up the trident? On the beach? You should be able to, if you're close enough.

EDIT: I just tried it and it works.

This whole jDOSBox thing is just plain impressive. And from the (very) little I've read, it's sprung up out of nowhere in a very short amount of time.

The jDOSBox author only announce his initial project only about three months ago and has made rapid progress since. Granted, it is based in on the DOSBox code, but still it is impressive.

It kept telling me, "You've left me speechless" (I believe it says) even though I am standing right in front of it (to the point that the character can't even walk OVER it, he physically STOPS at the trident).

Doh! Went to test it and show a screen shot - getting this error - won't even load:

Failed update of online playFailed to select the game from db
Warning: mysql_fetch_array(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in /home/a6949933/public_html/desktop/onlinescigame.php on line 62

EDIT: Nevermind, a few refreshes and it's working now.

Now let's see about the trident...

EDIT2: WHAT THE FRACK?!?! I swear to you it was NOT working this morning...!

I finally got a chance to check it out. I love it! It captures the spirit, charm and looks of KQ1SCI. I really hope you can find time to start working on this again. I would get more enjoyment out of it than I did with AGDI's VGA remake. It could easily become my favorite fan SCI game if it gets finished.

I hope I do too. It's fun to work on and reimagine different sections. I still have sketches a friend made for me of the left-side of the church and the church interior that I need to trace and get in the game. They look sweet.

Wow, it's great to see this game is so close to completion!

Unfortunately, whenever I try to start it, it hangs up at the DOSBox prompt with the message "Illegal command: autorun.bat". Is anyone else getting this problem?

It's not really that close :). Just thought I'd share it's current iteration in a fully interactive presentation.

And it works fine for me....it does have unpredictable results on random systems.

Also, I think I've discovered why picking up the trident wasn't working for you before, Tawmis. The phrase "pick up" is actually not currently understood by the parser :). You have to actually type "get" or "take".

Ah! I wonder what I did the second time - I bet I did get the second time...!
Will you guys be putting "pick up" in the parser?

This is cool on multiple levels. Firstly, that you can run DOSBox in a browser, and secondly that you're doing an SCI remake of King's Quest II.
