Most anticipated games of 2011?

- BATMAN: ARKHAM CITY -- (Fall 2011 for PC | PS3 | Xbox 360) -- How do you create a follow-up to what's widely considered the best superhero game of all time? Carefully, that's how. The good news is that Batman: Arkham City is being built by Rocksteady Studios -- the same team behind the effortlessly awesome Batman: Arkham Asylum -- and trades the confined corridors of the asylum for the darkened slums of Gotham. Expect tons of bat -villains, plenty of bat-brawling, and enough bat-gadgets to keep you busy for weeks.
-
- GEARS OF WAR 3 (Fall 2011 for Xbox 360) -- The third installment in the hard-hitting shooter series from Epic Games has suffered a few delays, but it's on track to arrive just in time to blow up your fall gaming budget. Big action? Check. New weapons? Check? Insane multiplayer? Check. If you own an Xbox 360, you're going to want to put a check next to this one on the calendar.
-
- PORTAL 2 (April 18 for PC | PS3 | Xbox 360 | Mac) -- It's still alive. Taking place hundreds of years after the events in the award-winning original Portal, the sequel once again pits gamers against the droll, sadistic computer GLaDOS. That means tons of new test chambers requiring liberal use of the Portal gun, along with a compelling new co-op mode. No word on cake, however.
-
- UNCHARTED 3: DRAKE'S DECEPTION (Nov. 1 for PS3) -- Sorry, Indy. No offense, Lara. But when it comes to seat-of-your-pants adventure, none can currently hold a candle to the wry star of Uncharted, Nathan Drake. The intrepid explorer returns in this sequel, which sees Drake knee-deep in the swirling sands of a lost Arabian kingdom.
-
- MASS EFFECT 3 (Fall 2011 for PC | PS3 | Xbox 360) -- All good things must come to an end, including the spectacular space opera that is Mass Effect. The final game in the trilogy will complete the tale of Commander Shepard as he tries to save humanity from a seemingly unstoppable race of evil machines. Decisions made in past titles will play a part in the experience, too, so you might want to use the time before its release to play catch-up. Trust us, it's worth it.
-
- THE ELDER SCROLLS V: SKYRIM (Nov. 11 for PC | PS3 | Xbox 360) -- The Elder Scrolls series is synonymous with huge, open-ended role-playing, and Skyrim looks to be no exception. Though little is currently known about the direct sequel to smash RPG Oblivion, we're pretty sure you'll swing swords, cast spells, toy with morality and, if the brief trailer is any indication, deal with enormous rock dragons.
-
- THE LAST GUARDIAN (Fall 2011 for PS3) -- Initially revealed back in mid-2009, this tale of boy-meets-giant-ferret-dragon has captivated Playstation 3 owners from the very beginning. Why? Because it looks astonishingly beautiful, for one thing, but it also has great genes: it's built by Team Ico, the creative force behind much-beloved PS2 hits Ico and Shadow of the Colossus.
-
- THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: SKYWARD SWORD (2011 for Wii) -- Do we really need to explain why the next Zelda game is bound to be awesome? How about this: it's the prequel to Ocarina of Time, one of the best games ever made, features a unique, impressionist art style, and is being crafted by design legend Shigeru Miyamoto. Consider it pre-ordered.
-
- MARVEL VS. CAPCOM 3 (Feb. 15 for PS3 | Xbox 360) -- Clearly tired of fighting one another, some of the toughest heroes and villains from the Marvel universe have in the past found success by taking on characters from game maker Capcom's stable. They'll taste success again in the long-awaited third iteration, which packs quite a punch with impressive visuals and hordes of crazy moves. Excelsior!
-
- RAGE (Sep. 13 for PC | PS3 | Xbox 360 | Mac) -- Love the Fallout games but wish they were more action-packed? We've got your next must-have. Developed by shooter pros id Software (Doom, Quake), this post-apocalyptic romp aims to blend action, shooting, racing and role-playing into one delicious -- and ambitious -- package. Judging by early looks, they just might pull it off.
-
- STAR WARS: THE OLD REPUBLIC -- (Summer 2011 for PC) -- Set thousands of years before the Star Wars films, this massively-multiplayer game turns players into smugglers, troopers, bounty hunters, and naturally, Sith and Jedi Knights battling for control of the galaxy far, far away. Better still, it's created by Bioware (Mass Effect, Dragon Age) and features voice-acting for every single character you encounter. That's some serious Force power.
-
- L.A. NOIRE (Spring 2011 for PS3 | Xbox 360) -- The hitmakers at Rockstar Games don’t like to play it safe, and with Game of the Year winners like Grand Theft Auto IV and Red Dead Redemption under their belt, they don’t have to. Their next open-world outing takes place in the seedy streets of 1940s Los Angeles, an environment rife with sex, crime, and what sure looks like a lot of dark, gritty fun.
-
- DRAGON AGE II (March 3 for PC | PS3 | Xbox 360) -- The epic fantasy world of Ferelden enraptured role-playing gamers -- and everyone at Yahoo! Games -- back in 2009, but that was just the beginning. The sequel to Dragon Age: Origins ups the ante everywhere, taking place across a full decade as players battle the Darkspawn and bring a hero to power.

Hah! Well my list is on the thread you created and can be see here.DeadPoolX wrote:That's what they all say...Tawmis wrote:Just to point out, these weren't MY most anticipated... it was an article on the web.Qbix wrote:zelda and duke nukem forever (if it comes out)![]()
That said of the ones above:
DRAGON AGE II
- Strangely enough... some reason my interest in this is declining. I don't know if it's because of all the DLCs they made and charge so much for. I mean, if you purchase each DLC as it comes out, you have easily spent over 40 bucks. I get that companies have to make money. But they milked this. They got everyone's 40 bucks. Then mooched another 40 throughout the year, to bide their time till Dragon Age II came out. Now if you don't get the super duper collector's edition with all the snazzy bells and whistles - there's already a DLC - in the form of a character - and Dragon Age II isn't even released yet. I dunno. Just... irritates me.
STAR WARS: THE OLD REPUBLIC
I would be interest in this - if it was free to play. But if you put Bioware and Star Wars together in the form of an MMO... there will be no need for them to do free to play. They're going to nab faithful subscribers who have been waiting for Star Wars to be done right in the form of an MMO - and Bioware will deliver. Without fail. Sadly, I can't tolerate monthly fees anymore for MMO's. Because if there was one that would have brought me back... it would have been this one.
MARVEL VS. CAPCOM 3
I may get this... but I can't even begin to explain how disappointed I am to see that X-23 is in the game.
MASS EFFECT 3
- Will, of course, be picking up this one.
Although perhaps because I didn't follow DLCs as closely with this as I did with Dragon Age... it's not bugging me yet. I don't even know how many DLCs were made for Mass Effect 2 that were pay? I had the Collector's Edition that came with a few things free by redeeming the code on the card.
PORTAL 2
Never figured out the big craze of the first one. Just seems to be a physics problem over and over and over that you try to solve and time. Not much more to it, so far as I played before the yawnfest took over. Zilch interest.
GEARS OF WAR 3
The thought of this makes me orgasm in my pants, if I am to be honest...

As for the list, not too surprised at some of them, never heard of others.
Tawm, you realise you don't have to buy all the DLC for Dragon Age, right?
As for Portal, the reason it was so popular wasn't only because of the game-play, although I'm sure some people liked the change from shooters. It was because of the dark humour of the AI. GlaDOS was priceless. Some of the comments she makes are wickedly funny. Whoever thought an AI could be petulant?

I dunno. Some of the weird pictures DPX has sent me of himself... granted, he had been drinking... a lot... there was purple...Maiandra wrote: Erm...I created that thread, not DPX. He doesn't wear purple.![]()
Very true. You don't have to buy the DLCs. (This discussion will no doubt remind me of the Lucas is Evil/Star Wars thread)... But the DLC usually offers a bit more story - to SOMETHING in the game - whether a character, a chunk of land, etc. And I enjoyed DRAGON AGE so much that I bought the RPG (Pen & Paper) JUST to have additional information about it - that's how much I liked it. But they seemed to pop DLC for Dragon Age non stop - and at 5 bucks a pop (or so, if not a little more) - it could get costly fast. Yes, 5 bucks isn't much to some... and the end result is, I will indeed get my enjoyment out of the DLC (though I have missed like the last 3 or so? DLCs for Dragon Age)... I end up paying QUITE a bit of money for DRAGON AGE, when I start off with the Collector's Edition as it is. To have the "Complete Dragon Age" ends up costing me well over $100 over time. When, ideally, it would be much more logical to wait for all the DLC to come out and wait for them to do their "Ultimate Edition" that has all that DLC and the entire game for like 70 bucks. But then the downside is... waiting... and hearing about everyone else how much they're enjoying the game and DLC.Maiandra wrote: Tawm, you realise you don't have to buy all the DLC for Dragon Age, right?I only buy the ones that sound interesting story-wise. I understand what you're saying, but I look at it as: if others want to buy them and it means greater support for the series (which means a sequel is more likely), I don't have a problem with them selling it. It's an option for those that want it.
We will have to agree to disagree. I found chewing my toenails more exciting than PORTAL. But I got it for free... so I can't bitch too much. I just never understood the hype for it.Maiandra wrote: As for Portal, the reason it was so popular wasn't only because of the game-play, although I'm sure some people liked the change from shooters. Re: Most anticipated games of 2011?
It sounds like you're buying the DLC (and other game-related material) to have the "full collection" more than getting what you really want to play. I'm really picky when it comes to DLC, but as we've noticed in a recent DA thread, we do approach situations differently.
As for Portal... well, it's an Adventure/Puzzle game using an FPS engine. I think what people really like about it is the overall sense of humor and just how different it is. It's fun to shoot and blow up enemies, but after a while it gets tedious. Sometimes it's nice to play a game where enemies aren't rushing at you.

Re: Most anticipated games of 2011?
I love Dragon Age so much that I've bought every single DLC they have released, not because of completion but mainly because I was eager for more. However, of the eight DLC they released, I'd recommend only four of them:
Warden's Keep, because the story is quite good, a couple of combats are interesting and it gives you access to two new talents that, in some cases, can be quite good.
The Stone Prisoner, because Shale is one of funniest characters of the game, her backstory is fascinating and Cadash Thaig is wonderfully designed.
Leliana's Song, which is simply the best DLC to date. Great story, great characters, nice quests, interesting narrative, challenging combats. Leliana's background is really fascinating and it was great to get to know her better. Really, if you liked Leliana, you must play this DLC, whose structure should be fairly similar to Dragon Age 2.
Witch's Hunt, while I don't think it's as good as Leliana's Song, provides a nice closure to the story and at least one of the sub-quests is quite interesting in its execution. Beware of bugs, though: dowloading the automatic updater from the Social Site is a must, if you want to play it to the fullest.
One the other hand, I'd recommend Golems of Amgarrack only if you have already finished Awakening and can import a character from there, and only if you aren't scared by the sheer difficulty of it. GoA is, simply put, a nightmare to finish: I don't know what they were thinking, but this DLC is hard. Extremely hard. Even when played at Normal, let alon at Difficult.

I loved Portal for the portals. Everything else was a bonus. Using portals in such fantastic ways interesting was incredibly fun and addicting.
