Black Mirror help

Post by Jules » Sun Sep 19, 2010 7:50 pm

Patrick is playing Black Mirror and stumbled upon a few issues. Does anyone know a solution?
Patrick wrote:I am having problems with Black Mirror 1 on Windows 7.

A few times in the game, the audio will screech really loudly. I can deal with this; however at one point just after the loud screeching noise the game crashed. I lost my saved game and was forced to start over.

I googled for help and found a few sites where people were having similar problems. It doesn't seem a solution was ever posted.

Any ideas?

It might make a difference as to what OS and/or audio hardware he is using. I am not that familiar with the game, so without dragging out my copy of the game to install and explore it, anything that I might suggest will just be a stab in the dark.

Off hand it sounds like it might possibly be some kind driver or DirectX issue. Besides updating his audio drivers, etc., he can play around hardware acceleration. If the game is QuickTime based he can try changing to Safe Mode (waveOut only) and (GDI only) from the QuickTime Control Panel applet or try Quicktime Alternative.

It did prompt him to install DirectX 9 when setting it up. Windows 7 came with 10. He'll try a few things tonight. Thanks, Collector.

Vista and Windows 7 come with both DirectX 9 (for backwards compatibility) and 10 for Vista or 11 for Windows 7. He could try to update his DirectX 9.

He says thanks for the help but switching to DirectX 9 didn't help. He'll try a few other things.

It is not a matter of "switching to DirectX 9", both are installed at the same time and both need to be updated separately. Did he try any of the other things that I suggested?

Well, his eyes were glued to the Saints game when I asked him, so of course I didn’t get much of a detailed answer. ;) I’ll let you know if he found a way to get by it. I’ll bug him more about it tonight.

Edit:
He said he didn’t switch to Dx9, he updated to Dx9.

Also, he asked how do you determine if it’s “quicktime based”?

If the installer also tries to install QuickTime.

After I get my PC problems sorted out I'll take a look at the game.

Figured I'd put this here in case neither you nor Patrick knew about it, Jules... I didn't realize the same folks who are making GREY MATTER also made BLACK MIRROR... and there's a BLACK MIRROR II in the works (or already done?)...

If anyone would like to translate:
