Question re: Monkey Island 1 (Special Edition)
Is this game available or not? *shrug* The official website says that it's available only on Steam, but I've read (in the wikipedia entry, I think) that it won't be available until May 2010 or something of that nature. Any ideas?

Here's the link to Steam:
TSoMI SE
So it looks that it's available. I did not purchase, as I do not have an account there. Didn't you read about Mokey Island 2 SE?

That's stupid. SMI:SE has been released for months. I own it on Steam and play it often. But you can also get it on Direct2Drive if you're in North America. Wikis are sometimes not reliable and this is such a case.
And there hasn't been an official announcement on any existence of a MI2:SE yet.

Maia and I have TSoMI:SE as well. I think we bought it during the last end-of-the-year sale on Steam.
Rath, I don't know where you read that, but the Wiki says the special edition was released on July 15, 2009. Maybe someone fixed the Wiki. Whatever the case, it's available for purchase now.

Hmm. My bad, then. Sorry. *blush* Any idea if it is (or will be) available commercially? I don't have a Steam account, and would really rather play it without having to connected to Steam to do so. *shrug* Also, seeing as I don't live in North America, Direct2Drive probably won't work for me.

One can hope GOG.com eventually will get it, when they manage to convince the good people behind, that it's not that dangerous to go the DRM-free way

Re: Question re: Monkey Island 1 (Special Edition)
Steam has an offline mode, so you don't need to be "connected" to it. You need to load the game ONCE while online and from there on out, you can play it offline. Steam will always load up when playing the game, but that's harmless. It has a very small footprint and if you're not online, you're completely private. Even if you're online, you can make your profile private. Maia used to do that (she doesn't care now since all people can really see is her stats on TF2 and L4D).Rath Darkblade wrote:Hmm. It's highly unlikely the MI remake will ever be sold commercially. It's not a "money making" entity. It was designed for those who're fans of the original or Adventure Games in general (a market that is admittedly incredibly small nowadays). To release the game in stores or even on Amazon would mean an overall loss of money UNLESS they increased the price from $10.00, in which case, a profit might be obtained by both the developer and store selling it.
That's why it's sold through Steam or Direct2Drive. Since it's digital, there's no packaging, no shipping and no shelf space required. GOG might have it at some point, but that's still an online vendor.
Honestly, I prefer the Steam route. That enables you to have the game anywhere, at any time. Just download it through your account and it's there. But if you're wary of Steam (for some reason or another), then going with Direct2Drive (if it's available in Australia) or eventually GOG would probably be your best bet.
No matter which you choose, you'll need a credit card or at least a PayPal account. So if you don't have either (and I seem to recall that being the case a while back), you'll need to get one or both.
