That depends on how much money Dreamfall made. If the Norwegian government sees it as a "loss" (in other words, the game cost more to make than it brought in), I doubt they'll invest in a new game.Maiandra wrote:I think Dreamfall was partially funded by the Norwegian government, so perhaps they will contribute for the third installment as well.

That's something unusual, getting funding from a government for a game.
I suppose that would work if they thought it would spur economic development, however.

I think the idea behind that was to promote works from their own country. As Maia has told me, most people automatically assume many products are from the United States. That's why some companies are helped out by their government, to show that they're not a U.S. organization and to get recognition.Tinuviel wrote:That's something unusual, getting funding from a government for a game.

Obviously, in the U.S. most private companies don't receive government funding. Our capitalistic system tends to keep government and industry separate (unless a monopoly is formed). But we also have a much larger consumer base than many countries out there, too.

The intent was more of a cultural promotion, much the same as the promotion of films.

I have to say I am in love with this game... TLJ... I haven't even got far... but I love it already. I about fell out of my chair laughing when I clicked on her at the beginning and she says, "I'm in my underwear ... this is so inappropriate!"

Re: The Longest Journey/Dreamfall
Rezzing this somewhat older thread -
I threw TLJ on my desktop since I my laptop is Vista and now giving me issues with the DVD ROM.
So anyway - started all over with this game. Did the dream sequence, saved the egg, woke up, talked to the woman downstairs, talked to the latino guy outside, went to the academy, painted, spoke with Emma, went to the cafe to meet Emma and spoke with her and charlie, picked up the ticket on the poster (picked up a few things here and there too).
Now I am supposed to meet the latino guy whose name is escaping me at the play (I imagine) - so I went to the subway and got my cash card, did the genetic scan and now approved - but I don't see how to select a subway destination since the play isn't available from walking distance - and I have back tracked to all the areas I can walk to and have apparently done everything I possibly can.
(Although the helpless rubber ducky thing outside the window is driving me mad...)

UHS Hints has a pretty good system of hints, if you're stuck. I used them probably more than I should the first time I played TLJ. Unfortunately I don't remember enough details of the game to give you any hints for that area myself.

To prove I have been away from adventure games too long - I had a duh! moment and figured it out...
- the bird wants the bread from the cafe
- the address is on the stupid ticket I picked up off the poster! I just forgot to look at the ticket!

Re: The Longest Journey/Dreamfall
At work, and I knew today was going to be SUPER slow...
And I was right.
So I had brought my personal laptop to either work on the LSL site, or play THE LONGEST JOURNEY.
Since I am posting in this thread, you can see where my choice was. I have never beat TLJ.
So I cranked it up today - and for the life of me - could not remember WHAT I was doing. So I started all over.
Now...
Either I have been out of the adventure game circle for ENTIRELY too long (which is possible since all the adventure games I play are repeats from classic Sierra and the like, which I have beaten a hundred times or whatever...)
... but by the gods, TLJ is freaking hard. Did anyone else find it difficult?
I find I have to shift my thinking, not just to adventure game mode, but also ... almost a Myst-like mode as well.
EDIT: Looked at my last save game before starting the new one... 12/26/09. A little over a year ago!

Some of these things for TLJ are a bit... Out there.
First... this one should have been more obvious to me... but the Toy Monkey's Eye... not a big deal... found that because I was stuck and just clicking everything in an insane manner... but first... One of them I have to sincerely bitch about... Rubber Ducky + Clamps + Clothes Line = Fishing Line? THAT is way, way, way, way, WAY far fetched. I mean. WAY the frick far fetched.
And use it to get a frakkin' KEY?!?!?!?!?!?!?? Seriously? A frakkin' KEY?!?!?!?!?!?!? that I'd like to point out I didn't even freaking see. Once again, just clicking because I was stuck, she suddenly knelt down and was like, "Oh, look." You have to be PRECISE when clicking the sparks to even have her made note of the key!
Seems like a really good game... but if these puzzles are any indication... I worry.

I'll confess that I had to refer to a walkthrough for a couple of the puzzles, but I got most of them without help. Of course what makes the game is the rich narrative. I found it to be a very fun game.

The infamous puzzle you mention is the worst of the game, almost at par with the Cat Mustache. Fortunately, the game gets better and somewhat easier along the way

Quite difficult from what I remember. And I didn't even make it out of the city. Gotta start it again.

I found pressing "X" once will show exits out of areas... which helped, for when you first leave the boarding house place and have no idea where the heck to walk... I do like that the "train station" map works a lot like GK1's map.MusicallyInspired wrote:Quite difficult from what I remember. And I didn't even make it out of the city. Gotta start it again.

Re: The Longest Journey/Dreamfall
No no. I mean I never actually made it to the fantasy setting. I was in the main city area portion of the game and never went beyond that progress-wise. Unless I'm mistaken and the whole game takes place in the city?
