Grim Fandango

Post by Rath Darkblade » Fri Dec 18, 2009 6:30 am

Does anyone remember this game? ;) I think it's almost 10 years old, and perhaps rather obscure, but it's still one of the best adventure games I've ever seen.

What do you think? :)

My copy is sandwiched right between King's Quest 6 and Gabriel Knight on my "easy access" rack.

I don't think it's too obscure. It did make off with tons of awards in 1998. it just wasn't a big seller. It's a lot like "The Iron Giant" in the sense that it seems to be more popular with gamers now than it was then.

I hated Grim Fandango. I'm sure it was a good game, but the control scheme turned me off so much I couldn't play it. I prefer point-and-click controls for Adventure Games.

I know that the game enjoys a following, but even though I could appreciate the story I was not able get into the game enough to play all of the way through, either. I never though about it, but it may very well be the controls.

I felt the same when I first got the game until earlier this year.
I decided to play through all the old games - even those with keyboard controls - and Grim Fandango was one of them.
It turned out to be quite a pleasant surprise and very enjoyable. :)
I was determined to play through it despite the controls and after a little while I didn't notice it anymore.

Hmm. I know the controls aren't very easy to start with, but after a while you get used to it and enjoy the story, and then you don't really mind the controls much. ;) It's also part of the fun.

Is it possible to play this game, since I don't have a computer that runs Windows 98?

Hey thanks! I've had a copy lying around for months but my Win 98 E-drive crashed before I could install it on there, and I'm really not sure about downloading files of which I don't know the authors.

Hmm... I tried this, and Grim Fandago worked perfectly after a few tries! However, MI3 is still not working for me. :( I constantly get random audio problems (e.g. Guybrush looking at Wally and saying "That's the cutest pirate I've ever seen. Ever seen. Ever seen. Ever seen." etc., ad nausea). I wouldn't mind except that it drowns out the rest of the dialogue. :(

Any ideas?

Rath,

Someone was having the same problem with Grim Fandango and offered this solution:

You are using ScummVM for MI3, aren't you?

Err... I'm not sure what that means. :( I have the original MI3 CDs, and I used the installer file and launcher from the mixnmojo site - is that what you're referring to, Collector? I still get sound stutter regardless.

Thanks for the linky, dotkel! :) I tried it out - the link to the imagecfg file doesn't work, but it gave me an idea for something I hadn't thought of... I forgot to turn on Windows 98 Compatibility. *blush* I turned it on now and it works like a charm! :)

I'm still not sure about MI3 though... I turned on Windows 98 Compatibility and tried opening the game in Windowed mode. It starts ok, but when I try to speak to Wally, I get a Windows error, part of the picture disappears, and I can't proceed. :(

It'd be great if anyone has any ideas. Thanks in advance! :)
