Monkey Island games (special editions)

I really, really want to get the two special edition Monkey Island games (for PC), but I'm not comfortable with getting them over Steam (
here), because of the huge download involved. Is there any other way I can get them - perhaps in DVD format, like Tales of MI?
I had a look on the LucasArts site, but there doesn't seem to be any way of doing that there apart from Steam.
Any ideas?

As far as I know, Steam is the only way to get it on the PC.
Rath, they're not big downloads -- at least not by modern standards. MI1:SE is a little over 2GB and MI2:SE isn't even as large as that!
If it's a "it-takes-too-long-to-download" issue for you, just set Steam to download them overnight. I've done that before, but that was with
Empire Total War, which is over 15GB.
If you want hard copies, download the games and back them up onto DVDs. You'll still need Steam to play them (which doesn't seem like a problem, since you're playing
Skyrim on there), but you won't have to re-download them again in the future.
The only other option is for someone to burn a backup of both games onto a DVD and mail them to you. Given the distance between North America or Europe and Australia, the shipping fees would cost more than the games themselves!

Actually, they've been released in retail (and don't require Steam) and they also come with some bonus commentary videos from MI2SE that weren't in the game.
It's only available in Europe, though.

Well, that's good to know. The only problem, of course, is that shipping will be a nightmare.

Aww.

Why only in Europe? Are there any plans to release it in NA or Australasia?

After checking around a bit, it seems like the retail version is only available in Europe, just like MI says. I can find it on Amazon.co.uk, but not Amazon.com and Amazon.ca.
Oh and you can't buy games from Amazon.co.uk and have them shipped to Australia. You can do that with books, music and movie DVDs, but not games apparently.
So your options look like:
1. Buy and download them using Steam.
2. Wait for the retail edition to be available outside Europe (and there's no telling if it ever will).
3. Get someone to purchase the retail edition for you and then ship it themselves.
My advice? Once again, just get them on Steam. Downloading 2GB might take about 30 minutes or so.

Hmmm. After looking around amazon.co.uk for a bit, I stumbled across
this.
It looks like at least three merchants (findprice, sent2u and The Book Depository) will deliver to Australia. Under their
delivery rates, it specifies that they'll deliver to any country within the Amazon.co.uk marketplace - and Australia is one (

!!!), even though I have to pay more for shipping. (Well, obviously).
I've purchased books through The Book Depository before, and I know they deliver to Australia. I don't think they sell games, though - I tried looking up "Monkey Island Special Edition" at
their site, and found nothing. So... I'm confused.
So what do you think? Will that work? Any ideas?

Hmm... I completely forgot to check individual sellers. I normally skip them in favor of Amazon itself.
Contact the sellers themselves by email and make sure they send to Australia. I know they say they do and Australia's part of the Amazon.co.uk marketplace, but just to be safe, check it out first (especially The Book Depository, since their merchant on Amazon and their own website don't seem to mesh).
I'd also go over the exact shipping rates, customs fees and how the game will be shipped. You'll want insurance on it in case it gets lost in transit.
Oh and have you checked eBay? You can find some really good deals on there.

I buy a lot of things from The Book Depository and I think they're really great. However, DPX is right: contact the seller directly and ask him about the shipping raters, etc.

Rath, I don't know if you've already ordered the retail version, but if you haven't, you might want to look at Steam's version again. Right now, the
Monkey Island: Special Edition bundle (that's both MI1 and MI2) is on sale for $5.09 USD.
You can see MI:SE's Steam store page
here. You should know that although Steam's Autumn Sale lasts from Nov 23 - 27, this particular deal is a ONE DAY SALE special.
So if you see this before the sale ends (which'll happen in another 18 hours and 27 minutes, as of this post), you might want to reconsider ordering it from an Amazon seller. I think you'll save a fair amount of money.
