Does anyone know just why Windows made the horrendous decision to change their Sound Recorder from this to this?

ARRRRRGGGGHHHH! Granted, the pre-Vista recorder was simplistic, but I could use it to do everything I needed it to do. For instance, I could easily cut and paste portions of a sound file and re-save it as a new sound file; I could start and pause recordings, and go back and forth within them as the need arose; and most importantly of all, I could record more than one minute's worth of music at the one time.

So just why, in the name of sanity had Microsoft chosen to basically devastate, mutilate, perforate, and castrate one of the most useful sound programs they had?

Any ideas, anyone?

The old XP recorder was nearly worthless anyway. Why not just use Audacity?

Hmm. I agree that the old XP recorder offered very few features compared to Audacity - however, its main advantage was being so very easy to use.

I've tried using Audacity and reading the Audacity help, but it was frustratingly short in many places (e.g. on how to record backing tracks).

Is it possible to use the XP Sound Recorder with Windoze 7? If not, is there a program that's a little easier to use, or has easier-to-read help, than Audacity?

Audacity is probably the easiest program to use, at least for free, anyway. Look up some video tutorials if you're having problems. I bet there's someone on YouTube who's done that already.

If you're really against using Audacity, then I've read you can copy the sndrec32.exe file (found in C:\WINDOWS\system32\) from WinXP over to Win7. It'll supposedly work, but I don't know for sure as I've never tried it.

Granted that some things with Audacity may be a little more complex, but that is for features and abilities that is completely missing from the Windows sound recorder. If you don't use the extra features it is every bit as easy to use as the Windows sound recorder. Just pretend those extra buttons are not there

Agreed. Audacity is pretty awesome. And it's free. I use GoldWave, and it's free, to an extent. It will tell you when you have used all your "Uses" within the program opening. But you can close it and reopen it and keep going. (I however, for NeN, ordered a license version).
