Hmm... game question

I've been trying to get Battle for Middle-Earth and Battle for Middle Earth II to work on my computer, without success. :(

I am running Windows 7 64-bit on an Intel Core i3 CPU @3.07GHz processor, with 4 Gb of RAM.

Both these games used to work when I ran Windows XP SP2 (and SP3), so I thought that if I ran them in WinXP SP2 (or SP3) compatibility mode, they should work fine. But they don't. Instead of starting normally, the computer simply reads the CD-ROM(s) in the D drive, and does nothing. I don't even get a splash screen. :(

I tried all kinds of workarounds, googling for any. I found that I needed to change the options.ini file so that it has six lines (I can't remember what they were) instead of whatever this file had in it at the time; I tried, but it didn't do anything.

Any hints? I'm thoroughly stuck. :-(

Thanks! :-)

Without having the games I can't experiment. I assume that you tried the various compatibility modes, etc. Have you tried XP Mode? You could also try the MS Application Compatibility Kit.

A site said to try this:

Found the solution... I bet you have a big monitor, as i do. It seems EA doesnt like big monitors. So the solution is to add an Options.ini in the C:\Users\[your login name]\AppData\Roaming\My Battle for Middle-earth(tm) Files folder (or C:\Documents and Settings\[your login name]\Application Data\My Battle for Middle-earth(tm) II Files if you use XP) and put the following content in that new created file:
AudioLOD = High
HasSeenLogoMovies = yes
IdealStaticGameLOD = High
Resolution = 1024 768
StaticGameLOD = High
TimesInGame = 5

This site also supposedly has some fixes:

I've tried the various compatibility modes etc. - as I said in my post, I tried the WinXP SP2 and WinXP SP3 mode. What is XP Mode? I don't think I've come across that - is it available in Windows 7 64-bit?

***EDIT***
I've now read up on XP Mode, but I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium. XP Mode is only available for Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate editions. :x (What a STUPID idea - what about home users who want to run legacy games, or people who have a home business and need it to run legacy business software?) :x

I haven't tried the MS App Compat Kit either, but I'll give it a try. Thanks. :)

Yes, I've tried that, but it did nothing. :(

Hmm... now this looks more promising. I'll give it a try and let you know how it works out. ;) Thanks! :)

***EDIT*** Oops - doubled post... ugh. :( Can my previous post be deleted somehow? Pretty please? :)

EDIT2: What's it worth to ya, huh?
Feh! Did it anyway!
