Munt on Windows 7 64 bit

Post by Avelyn » Mon Dec 27, 2010 5:33 am

Is there a way I could instal mt-32 drivers on my 64 bit Windows 7 system? I have googled for hours and found no solution so far :(

No, 64-bit Windows requires 64-bit drivers. You can use a special build of DOSBox that has Munt incorporated into it. Like the driver, you will still need the ROMs.

Thanks. I know about DOSBox and the emulation, I am able to run it, because I have origina ROMs, but I would prefer runnign SIerra adventure games through SCUMMV, because it is much faster and more stable. But if there really is not a way yet, I will have to wait. But thanks anyway :)

Not true. They just have to be patched and set up properly. Also, ScummVM's sound emulation is far less accurate than that of DOSBox. You can improve many of the problems of the poor choice of defaults by manually changing settings, both through ScummVM's GUI and manually editing the ini file. If you don't know how to setup both the games' and DOSBox's settings and you are not sure about what patches to apply, these installers will do it all for you automatically.

The only Sierra games that I can really recommend ScummVM for are the windows only games or the ones that the Windows game is desirable over the DOS. Currently the only supported game that falls into this category is KQ6.

Thank you, your advice is very helpful, I will see if those new installers work under my Win 7 64 bit. But it still does not solve the problem of non-sierra games working under DOSBox, sometimes the performance is very poor, although I have 4 core INTEL processor and a lot of RAM and reasonable videocard

The installers will work on Win7-64 as they were developed and tested on Win7-64. As far as other games go, there are a number of reasons why it might seem as if you are getting poor performance with your games. Unless you are trying to run some of the later, more demanding DOS games, it is more likely some other issue than your PC not being able to handle it. Some of the earlier DOS games might default to just 3000 cycles unless you increase them (Ctl+F12) or set cycles in the dosbox.conf. If you post what games you are having trouble with I might be able to give you some advice.

There are many resources to help you with DOSBox, from various guides and the official forums to the frontends that give a graphical interface to DOSBox. The frontends can make it easy to choose DOSBox settings for your games. In my opinion, DOSBox Game Launcher, or DBGL, is by far the best. Many use D-Fend Reloaded, but I can't really recommend it. It tries to do so much hand holding that it just gets confusing. It also doesn't use a dosbox.conf for each game that has just the settings that vary from the defaults with the mountings. This makes it trickier to upgrade your DOSBox and makes it less obvious what settings might be giving you trouble.

If the conf file has a line in it of exit, it will close DOSBox when the game exits. Removing that line will allow you to see any errors displayed. Keep in mind that many, if not most, DOS games also need to be setup. Usually this can be done by running the game's setup in DOSBox before playing it the first time. Hardware must be selected and configured and sometimes the game has to be told where to find its resources. This is usually very easy to do, but if it has never been done, the game cannot start.

What game are you trying to setup?

It writes something like Java runtime cannot be found, but I installed the latest version. I am trying to setup Prince of persia shadows and the flame and Full throttle

OK, the Java error is from DBGL, not DOSBox. Did you also install the 64-bit Java? For Full Throttle just use ScummVM.

Yes, I installed 64bit java and I reinstalled, the problems are still the same. I managed to run Full Throttle via SCUMMV, but I still cannot run POP2 with mt-32 music

Try this:
  • Go to http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=26833 and download this special build of DOSBox (look for "testbuild (v4).zip"). and unzip it to:
    • "C:\Program Files (x86)\DOSBox"
  • Drop the MT32_PCM.ROM and MT32_CONTROL.ROM ROMs you already have in the same folder.
  • Download the following zip that contains a wizard that I wrote along with a preconfigured SETUP.CFG file set to use MT-32 music:
    DBWizard_MT-32.zip
    (296.68 KiB) Downloaded 265 times
and unzip it into your game's folder.
  • Run MT-32DBWizard.exe from the game's folder.
  • Enter the game's name when asked, avoiding the use of any illegal file name characters in the game's name (i.e. :,/,\, etc.)
  • Enter the game's main executable (PRINCE.EXE) when asked.
  • Enter the name of the icon (PRINCE.ICO) or whatever icon you wish to use that is in the game's folder when asked.
You will find a Windows shortcut to start the game in the its folder. You can copy it to your desktop, Start Menu or where ever you want to. You can change a few DOSBox settings as you wish, but the defaults should work. If you change your mind, you will find a config tool in the game's folder after running the wizard to change the settings at any later time.

I did as you suggested but the game is able to run its setup tool only, no game.

Sorry, my mistake. Rerun the wizard, but use PRINCE.EXE for the game's main EXE. I edited the instructions with the right name.
