Re: The many ways to refer to "The smallest room in the house"
Same here, only we use the name John. I didn't know! :D I'm wondering: why? Mumble mumble... The name "John" for a toilet dates back to when Prince John was chastised by King Richard. According to legend, Richard said the following: "Brother, you have surrounded your given name with a foul stench! ...

Re: The many ways to refer to "The smallest room in the house"
In my dad's house, my mom (when she was alive) had a small restroom she entitled "the powder room." None of us were allowed to use it, which begs the question: "why does it exist?" To this day, I still have no idea. However, whenever I visit my dad, I still refrain from using it (both my dad and bro...

Re: American English vs Commonwealth English
The whole "college" vs "university" thing depends on the usage, really. Someone will say, "I just graduated college" while they might also say, "I went to the University of Pennsylvania." The two words are, for the most part, interchangeable. I say "soda" as well. In Atlanta, where my brother is, ev...

Anything which you've covered perfectly and which doesn't need anything further from me isn't mentioned below... Restroom vs Washroom - Actually, bathroom here. Some petrol stations will talk about "restrooms" when they mean "toilets". Never ask for the bathroom when visiting Australia. You will be...

Because of that site, I looked up some old issues of Nintendo Power from the 1980s. I wish I had kept the 1st issue (which I had) because now it's something of a collector's item.

American English vs Commonwealth English
To start, I'd like to indicate that this thread is not meant to cause a fight nor is it intended to say one version of English is superior to the other. I've also included Canadian and Australian English under the heading of Commonwealth English, since most of it is derived from the UK and both coun...

Re: My claim to fame.
I don't know if anyone has caught this yet, but in the Winter 1988 issue (volume 1, number 4) of the Sierra Newsletter, there's a humorous mistake on page 2 when introducing Gold Rush! Look at the third paragraph down and read the first sentence, which starts off with "Players take on the role..." Y...

Re: IMAGINATION/The Sierra Network
I was one of the first members on The Sierra Network in 1991, which later became The ImagiNation Network after AT&T bought it from Sierra. I stayed there until it was bought out by AOL and subsequently shut down. I believe that was around 1995. I think Maia and I tried INN Revival. It's not bad, alt...

Re: And One Must Perish!
My kids and I say stuff from games all the time. "Tis beyond my reach" is a staple. Also, from Elder Scrolls, "You n'wah!" and "WHY...WON'T...YOU...DIE??" (when trying to swat a fly, naturally.,,) For some reason or another, my dad became obsessed with Diablo and Diablo II a number of years back. H...

Re: QfG5
I must say I'm a bit disoriented. I didn't do much, in the game, unless wandering around, talking to people and memorizing who's and what's where... But I feel a distinct sense of abandonment: what am I supposed to do? Have I lost some clue on what should be my first task? That's the best part of t...

Re: The Official Welcome Thread
Hopefully, not everyone will be grues. ;) Do you mean "Gross" like me? :D *waves to all the new people!* Nah, she meant "grue." Maia's referring to a well known line ("It is dark. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.") from the original Zork , which occurs if your lantern goes out or is stolen.

Re: 3.5" USB Drives.
My computer has a 3.5" diskette drive built into it, but what I'd really like to find is a 5.25" diskette drive. I haven't seen any -- the few that are still available -- that'd be compatible with today's machines or weren't specifically designed for older Apple computers.
