Re: A Return To My Bane. (Codename: Iceman)

I certainly why they'd want to use copy protection like that. However, like all copy protection schemes, it couldn't actually stop piracy, and it severely inconvenienced legitimate players. If you're giving someone a copy of the floppies, it's a simple matter to give them the relevant information fr...

Re: A Return To My Bane. (Codename: Iceman)

So that whole thing doesn't make sense in terms of the narrative, and it's just there for the sake of copy protection (and being one more thing the player can mess up)? That's disappointing. It seems that a lot of the gameplay comes from one of three things: 1. Copy protection. Lots of it. The intru...

Re: A Return To My Bane. (Codename: Iceman)

I decided that, since, if I was going to play it, it would be following a walkthrough to the letter, I might as well just watch a playthrough on YouTube. Wow. Brutal is right. There's one thing I still don't get: What's the deal with the earring? As I understand it, you're sent encoded messages by t...

Re: Police Quest - Where Am I From? Screen Capture Game.

It's screen 745 from PQ4. However, never having actually played the game, I can't identify what that screen is.

(Also, I don't really want to post the next one.)

Re: A Return To My Bane. (Codename: Iceman)

From what I've heard, the game goes out of its way to provide dead-end possibilities and game overs, even where they don't make sense with narrative. Also, significant portions of the game rely on just following the game manual, giving it one of the most intrusive forms of copy protection (the Conqu...

Re: "Achievement Unlocked!" - Making Sierra Games Modern.

I think achievements can be a lot of fun in adventure games. "Torin's Passage" already had the perfect set-up for one with "Use Bagpipes on Lucretia" when you unlocked a special message from Al Lowe. I also implemented them in my own game where you got special trophies for finding all the deaths, s...

Re: "Achievement Unlocked!" - Making Sierra Games Modern.

AGDI's KQ3 Redux already has achievements of a sort. You only figure out which ones you got at the very end of the game. As for adventure game achievements, I'm a bit conflicted. I really like achievements, but I just don't think they work well with that genre. At their best, achievements are a goal...

Re: Over 2,000 Dos Games Free To Play (Legally, I assume!)

Valve takes a 30% (AFAIK) cut from games sold via Steam, but the rest goes to the publisher/developer.

Re: Some thoughts on SQ5

All the SQ games had plenty of mere references to all sorts of sci-fi franchises. Those aren't what I take issue with.

Re: Some thoughts on SQ5

I certainly don't think that SQ5 was entirely bad (though I'd hesitate to the say the same of SQ6 :P) or that SQ1-4 were entirely good. I also do very much like Star Trek. I just don't like how that was used in SQ5-6. Space Quest didn't start out being being associated with Star Trek in particular, ...

Re: Some thoughts on SQ5

Well, SQ6 continued the use of StarCon, which is clearly just a Starfleet. In addition, it had (just to start; not intended to be an exhaustive list): A transporter A holodeck A tricorder datacorder A replicator The subtitle, "The Final Spinal Frontier" A security officer named Worf Dorff A recreati...

Re: Some thoughts on SQ5

I much prefer the earlier parts of the series. SQ1-4 were just comedic games in a sci-fi universe, with references to various sci-fi stories. With SQ5-6, however, it switched to being specifically a Star Trek parody. I didn't care for that change in direction.

Re: King's Quest by the Odd Gentlemen (Trailer inside!)

If you wait until all episodes are released, there's no significant difference between an episodic release and a non-episodic release. The difference is just that people who are okay with partial (and likely cliffhangery) games can start playing earlier. Personally, I'm not one of these; I prefer to...

Re: How many women did Larry sleep with?

The woman on the beach in LSL3 did have a name: Tawni. Also, the woman who ties you up is Fawn (Faith is the hotel employee who's faithful to her boyfriend).
