I was messing around... and just changed the directory to c: with nothing else, and it saved.
/facepalm

Actually the game doesn't do anything, it just stays at the King's Quest V screen 'Absence makes the heart go yonder'.
Do you think that is the problem there? It freezes up?

I've left it for about 10 minutes just to see if something would happen, but no cursor comes back
