Phantasmagoria 2: A Puzzle of Flesh's original requirements:
MS-DOS 5.0 or Windows 3.1 or greater
8 MB RAM
5 MB Hard drive space
SVGA 256 colors
SoundBlaster & 100% compatibles, Pro Aud Spectrum, Roland MT-32 or General MIDI
Like many of the later Sierra games, Phantasmagoria 2: A Puzzle of Flesh has installation problems with the installer not fuctioning with faster PCs or under Windows XP.
It is just searching your system for a previous installation. You can safely quit the AutoRun and just open the CD to run the installer. (Right click on the AutoRun button on the task bar and choose Close or use Ctl+Alt+Delete to end task. You can also hold the shift key down when you insert the CD and hold it until the PC reads it.)
SETUP caused a General Protection Fault in
module _SETUP.EXE at 0004:6357.
Choose close. SETUP will close.
You can't rerun the setup without ending the process (Ctl+Alt+Delete) or rebooting.
Skip the system test. You will still be able to install the game.
Audio problems are common in the later Sierra DOS SCI games. There's no single fix for all these games. You can try the Windows version.
Solution 1 (preferred):
Play the game in DOSBox.
Use VDMSound. The game work well with VDMSound. The sound will be as good as your audio hardware.
Solution 3 (DOS/Win9x):
Install DOS drivers for your soundcard. Without DOS drivers installed you won't have sound in a DOS window in Windows 9x. If you can't find DOS drivers for your soundcard, there is an alpha (developmental) version of VDMS that you can try.
Like many later Sierra games, Phantasmagoria 2: A Puzzle of Flesh has a few bugs.
Use the DOS support patch to convert this Windows only game to a DOS version which can easily be played in DOSBox. More information can be found below.
The game will install correctly on Windows XP, but when trying to run the game, this error will occur:
Script error #349I3
The DOS version does not have this problem, but, many copies of the game only have the Windows version. The Windows version of Phantasmagoria A Puzzle Of Flesh works great under Win98. It will also run in VMWare or Virtual PC with Windows 98 installed. Getting the DOS version working in XP is easy to do which will also work well in DOSBox.
To convert Phantasmagoria II (Windows only version), downloaded this patch:
Phantasmagoria2(P2DosXP).zip [914 KB]
It lets you create a DOS version of the game from the Windows 95 version. It has been modified from the official Sierra patch (P2DOSPAT.ZIP) to work in XP. The PATCH.BAT and PATCH2.BAT files included in the original patch don't work properly under Windows XP because some of the commands are incompatible.
Unzip the patch, start run.bat and follow the instructions. To play the game, run p2dos.bat. You can make a shortcut to p2dos.bat also.
NOTE: The movies do look better in the Windows version over the DOS, if you set your screen resolution to 16 bit High color (if your screen resolution is 32 bit you should still put it down to 16 bit because on 32 bit it looks does not look as good as 16, which the game was made for.) In DOS you only get 8 bit 256 colors, but the game will run in DOSBox.
Harrison Moccio has made a new installer for Phantasmagoria II, ala Enrico Rolfi's new Gabriel Knight installers.
"Phan2XP is a graphical installer used for configuring an MS-DOS emulator (DOSBox) for use with Phantasmagoria 2. Required files that are too large to stream are copied from the original disc and placed into the installation directory. A patched version of the SCI SoundBlaster audio driver is then copied to the installation directory from the installer archive. In addition, an emulation profile (DOSBox configuration file) is generated to ensure maximum compatibility and function."
